Communications Team Orientation Jan 2018

Media is a huge presence in our lives. Organizing around an issue requires powerful writers, photographers, videographers, and meme-makers to tell the narrative of the problems at hand and move people to join in action to address it. All of the campaigns rely on media to support their work. Corporate-sponsored media has shown to be biased, or even when scientifically accurate, unmotivating at best. News media removes *us* from the landscape of potential change-makes, largely focusing on industry, lawmakers, and financial world. Our job is to talk about climate a lot, educate, and inspire more action-takers.

This orientation will introduce you to how 350PDX works, and how to get started in the Communications team. Please bring a laptop or tablet if you have one.

The sky is the limit for projects you can take on. Some ideas to get you started: curate the latest climate news, write a critique of climate media coverage from another source (New York Times, Sightline, Climate Progress), help our team edit contributions from other volunteers, and publish a monthly newsletter, use social media to keep the public up to date about events, film actions, interview activists about their work, and more!
